The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State has clarified a recent report that suggested six out of 10 students in the state are drug users.

VerseNews reports that the clarification comes after the command’s Superintendent of Narcotics, Jibril Ibrahim, was reported to have indicated that the percentage of drug users among students was very high, possibly exceeding 50%.

However, the command’s spokesman, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, clarified that the figures mentioned were specific to clients treated at their rehabilitation centre.

He stated, “It has come to our notice that the recent statistics shared by one of our staff regarding drug use among students was a mistake, and we want to ensure accurate information is provided to the public.”

Maigatari emphasized that the statistics, indicating that five to six out of every 10 students are drug users, were confined to individuals treated at their rehabilitation center.

He apologized for any confusion caused by the misinterpretation, highlighting that these figures only reflect the prevalence of drug use among individuals seeking treatment within their facility and do not apply to all students studying in Kano.

“The statistics previously shared stating that out of every 10 students, five to six are drug users, was specific to the clients treated at our rehabilitation centre. We apologise for any confusion caused by this misinterpretation. It is important to note that these figures solely reflect the prevalence of drug use among individuals seeking treatment within our facility and not in any way applied to all the students studying in Kano.

“We understand the significance of accurate information in public discourse, particularly when it comes to sensitive topics like drug use. Therefore, we feel it is our responsibility to rectify any misunderstanding and ensure that the correct data is disseminated,” he added.
