X plans to introduce a posting fee for new users to combat bots, following its recent move to charge unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines $1 per year.

The platform’s major purge of spam accounts aims to improve user experience and reduce fake accounts.

Elon Musk plans to charge new X users a small fee for posting on the platform to address the bot issue.

In response to an X account discussing the platform’s changes, Musk stated that imposing a small fee on new accounts is the “only way” to halt the “onslaught of bots.”

“Unfortunately, a small fee for new user write access is the only way to curb the relentless onslaught of bots.”

“Current AI (and troll farms) can pass “are you a bot” with ease,” Musk wrote, referring to tools like CAPTCHA.

In response to another user, Musk later clarified that new accounts would be able to post on X without paying a fee after three months of creation.

“That is way harder than paying a tiny fee. This is only for new users. They will be able to do write actions for free after 3 months,” he said

As with many announcements related to the social platform, specific details about the implementation of this policy, including the timing and the fees new users might face, remain unclear.

In October, X began charging new unverified users $1 per year in New Zealand and the Philippines, allowing free users in these areas to read posts but not interact with them. To post content, like, repost, reply, bookmark, and quote posts, they were required to pay a fee. Musk may introduce a similar fee in other regions.

Earlier this month, X announced a significant purge of spam accounts, informing users that their follower count might decrease as a result. By introducing a fee for new users, the social media platform aims to address the bot issue more effectively.
