Former governor Nasir El-Rufai revealed that President Tinubu’s administration has resumed paying fuel subsidy, spending more than before without the public’s knowledge.

El-Rufai noted that the reversal comes as previous measures to mitigate the impact of removing the subsidy proved ineffective.

Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna state, revealed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has resumed fuel subsidy payments, even though many Nigerians were unaware of the policy’s return.

VerseNews reports that El-Rufai made the disclosure while speaking to journalists in Maiduguri, Borno state’s capital, on Monday, April 15. He noted that the government is now paying more for fuel subsidy than before.

El-Rufai explained that several measures implemented by Tinubu’s administration to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal had not been effective. This prompted the federal government to reverse its stance and reinstate the policy, as reported by Daily Trust.

Previously, President Tinubu had announced that the fuel subsidy would be removed, declaring that continuing the payments was not sustainable.

Despite El-Rufai’s support for the removal, he emphasized that the government needed to make necessary adjustments in its approach.

“Fuel subsidy is another policy that has been implemented by the president, it’s the right policy. I always supported withdrawing fuel subsidy.”

“But, in the course of implementation as you can see the government has now realized that the subsidy has to be back because right now, we are paying a lot of money for subsidy even more than before.

“This is because the impact has been seen and the packages of support that would reduce the impact have not been so effective in reducing the impact, so the federal government is back now subsidizing Petrol,” El-Rufai said.
