The Federal High Court in Abuja will rule on May 20 regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s transfer request from DSS custody.

Kanu’s counsel seeks house arrest or an alternative custody arrangement to avoid hindering his trial. The prosecution opposes the transfer request.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has set May 20 as the date to rule on an application seeking the transfer of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

VerseNews reports that the decision came after the judge heard arguments on the application during a court session on Wednesday.

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s counsel, moved the application during the proceedings, arguing that Kanu’s continued detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) could hinder the accelerated hearing ordered by the court.

Ejimakor requested Kanu be transferred from DSS detention to house arrest or another form of custody under a law enforcement agency.

Ejimakor cited the past cases of former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki and Islamic Movement in Nigeria leader Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, who were both previously placed under house arrest.

However, Adegboyega Awolomo, the prosecution’s counsel, urged the court to dismiss the application. Justice Nyako adjourned the case until May 20 to rule on the matter.
