Nnamdi Kanu in Court

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled March 21 for the fresh trial of Nnamdi Kanu after multiple reassignments due to claims of judicial bias.

Kanu’s case, previously stalled after Justice Nyako’s recusal, will now be handled by Justice James Omotosho.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled Friday, March 21, for the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to begin anew.

VerseNews gathered that this decision comes after a series of legal disputes over the handling of Kanu’s case, leading to multiple reassignments.

Kanu, who was brought back to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2021, had initially been facing trial under Justice Binta Nyako. However, following claims of bias by Kanu and his legal team, Justice Nyako recused herself on September 24, 2024, and referred the case to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment.

The Chief Judge initially returned the case to Nyako, insisting that a formal application was required for her withdrawal. In response, Kanu and his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, maintained that Nyako no longer had jurisdiction after stepping down, leading to an indefinite adjournment (sine die).

The latest reassignment to Justice Omotosho marks the fourth time Kanu’s case has changed hands, with previous judges, including Justice Ahmed Mohammed and Justice John Tsoho (now Chief Judge), also stepping down following similar objections.

As the new trial date approaches, all eyes remain on how Justice Omotosho will handle the high-profile case, which continues to draw national and international attention.
