The Federal Government has begun paying the N77,000 monthly NYSC allowance after a six-month delay, with some corps members confirming receipt.

Nigerians on social media are reacting, noting the lack of buzz compared to when payments were stalled.

The Federal Government has officially commenced the payment of a N77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

VerseNews reports that the announcement of a pay increase by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which initially brought relief and excitement among corps members nationwide, was met with disappointment due to delays in implementing the new allowance.

For almost six months after the announcement in September 2024, serving corps members continued receiving the previous N33,000 allowance introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Confirming the development to VerseNews, a serving corps member in Kwara State, identified as Adepoju, said the scheme had commenced payment of N77,000, describing the increase as “long overdue.”

He suggested that payments might be disbursed in batches, as some corps members had already received theirs while others were still waiting anxiously.

Nigerians on social media have also reacted to the development, which follows an assurance from the Minister of Youths that the federal government would clear the backlog of the N77,000 allowance.

A Twitter user, @ToluDaniel10, wrote: “NYSC is finally paying 77k to corps members 👏🏽. If you have this girl’s DM, go say a big thank you. I bet the government wouldn’t have listened to you if not for her.”

Another user, @fimlex2, wondered why there wasn’t much buzz compared to when the scheme failed, tweeting: “Why is everywhere quiet now? When NYSC wasn’t paying, people were shouting. Now that they’ve paid, no noise.”

“NYSC don pay corpers 77k now, see as everywhere just quiet.

Meanwhile, this increment aligns with the new minimum wage adjustments advocated by labour unions and the government.
