Senate President Codswill Akpabio has given an important update concerning the creation of the new new states.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed widespread claims that the National Assembly has approved new states, providing an update on the ongoing agitation for state creation in Nigeria.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio responded to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), clarifying that although the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 proposals, “not one has gone through full deliberation.”

He explained, “The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance.”

Akpabio cautioned communities against holding meetings or mobilising funds for proposed states that have not been legally recognised, stressing that “no new state has been approved by the Senate.”

He urged Nigerians to rely only on official National Assembly statements regarding constitutional amendments and state creation.
