INEC Announces Deadline for Voter Registration After Recording Over 1.3 Million Online Registrations in First Week

INEC has announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will continue until August 2026, following over 1.3 million online pre-registrations in its first week.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which began last week, will continue until August 2026.

Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, provided an update on Monday, reporting that 1,379,342 people participated in the online pre-registration nationwide within one week.

“The breakdown of the online pre-registrations shows that 661,846 (47.96%) are male and 717,856 (52.04%) are female. Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 constitute the majority of the registrants, with 860,286 (62.37%). In terms of occupation, 374,534 (27.15%) are students, while the figure for persons with disabilities is 27,089 (1.96%),” Olumekun said.

He also revealed that Osun State recorded the highest number of registrations with 393,269 (28.51%), followed by Lagos State with 222,205 (16.11%), and Ogun State with 132,823 (9.63%). The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded 107,682 (7.81%). At the bottom of the table were Ebonyi (261), Imo (481), and Enugu (484).

Physical registration commenced on Monday at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide.

“This will allow those who prefer the in-person option to register at the centres, as well as those who completed online pre-registration to finalize their registration,” the statement added.
