President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the end of the State of Emergency in Rivers State, declaring that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly will resume duties from September 18, 2025.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the end of the State of Emergency in Rivers State, declaring that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly will resume their constitutional duties from September 18, 2025.

In a nationwide address on Tuesday, the President stated that the emergency rule, which was proclaimed on March 18, 2025, had become necessary at the time due to a total breakdown of governance in the state. He noted that the crisis, which pitched the Governor and four lawmakers against 27 Assembly members aligned with the Speaker, had crippled governance and threatened peace and order in the state.

Tinubu explained that the suspension of the Governor, his deputy, and Assembly members for six months was a constitutional step taken under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution to restore calm and prevent further anarchy.

“It would have been a colossal failure on my part as President not to have made that proclamation,” Tinubu said, while commending the National Assembly for swiftly approving the emergency declaration.

The President acknowledged that over 40 court cases were filed in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Yenagoa challenging the declaration but stressed that the decision was justified to protect public safety and order.

He added that recent developments and intelligence reports indicated a new spirit of understanding, readiness, and commitment among stakeholders in Rivers State to return to democratic governance.

“This is undoubtedly a welcome development for me and a remarkable achievement for us. I therefore do not see why the state of emergency should exist a day longer than the six months I had pronounced at the beginning of it,” he stated.

Tinubu urged political leaders in the state to prioritize peace, order, and good governance, emphasizing that democracy can only deliver its dividends in an atmosphere of stability.

The President concluded with a call for unity:

“I implore all of you to let this realisation drive your actions at all times. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

With the directive, Governor Fubara and his cabinet are expected to resume full duties immediately, marking the end of the six-month emergency rule.
