President Bola Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brig.-Gen. (rtd.) Mohammed Buba Marwa as chairman of the NDLEA for another five years, citing his record in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

President Bola Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brigadier-General (rtd.) Mohammed Buba Marwa as chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a fresh five-year term, extending his leadership to 2031, the Presidency announced on November 14, 2025.

The reappointment was contained in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu described the move as a vote of confidence in Marwa’s efforts to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse, urging him to sustain the agency’s momentum in “tracking the merchants of hard drugs” endangering the nation’s youth.

Marwa, an indigene of Adamawa State, was first appointed NDLEA chairman in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He previously served as chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) from 2018 to 2020.

A former military governor of Lagos State and Borno State, Marwa is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy. His earlier roles included Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to Chief of Army Staff Theophilus Danjuma, and Academic Registrar at the NDA. He also served in diplomatic defence postings, including at Nigeria’s mission in Washington, D.C., and to the United Nations.

Marwa holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.

Under his watch since 2021, the NDLEA has reported major seizures and arrests, with the agency claiming the apprehension of about 73,000 drug mules and barons and the confiscation of over 15 million kilogrammes of assorted hard drugs. The agency has also stepped up nationwide sensitisation campaigns aimed at reducing drug abuse.

The reappointment signals the federal government’s preference for continuity in its anti-drug strategy and an endorsement of the NDLEA’s approach under Marwa’s leadership.
