Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on Sunday as the Super Eagles were eliminated by DR Congo in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Rabat.
Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria the perfect start with a third-minute goal, only for Meschak Elia to equalize in the 32nd minute. Despite several near-misses in extra time, neither side could break the deadlock, sending the match to penalties.

The shootout proved disastrous for the Super Eagles. Calvin Bassey missed the opening spot-kick, Semi Ajayi saw his effort saved, and Simon also failed to convert. DR Congo held their nerve to claim victory, advancing to the intercontinental playoff and ending Nigeria’s campaign in heartbreaking fashion.

DR Congo now moves on to the intercontinental playoff, keeping their World Cup hopes alive, while Nigeria is left to lament what could have been after a tense and high-stakes encounter.
