  • Former Niger State Governor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has endorsed the expulsion of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike from the PDP, describing the move as the removal of a “cancer” weakening the party.

Former Governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has hailed the expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party has finally removed a long-standing problem.

The PDP, during its national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Saturday, announced the expulsion of Wike, along with the suspension of National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose.

Speaking in Abuja during the 6th Zik’s Awards Lecture, part of activities marking the 121st posthumous birthday of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Aliyu expressed confidence that the party could now reposition itself after the disciplinary actions.

Aliyu stated, “Like surgeons, we remove a cancer, the cancer that has been part of our party, that has crippled the party. We hope that with the removal of the cancer, the party may be able to move and give Nigerians an option on what to do.”

He further warned that Nigeria must avoid drifting into a one-party system, stressing that the implications would be dangerous for the country’s democracy.

“If we make the mistake of creating a one-party state in Nigeria, we will pay for it. So, it’s good that we give an alternative to the Nigerian populace,” he added.

Aliyu’s remarks come at a time when the PDP is undergoing internal restructuring, with party leaders insisting that the disciplinary actions are necessary to stabilize the organization ahead of future political contests.
