  • The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of 41 Federal Unity Schools across the country following a surge in student abductions, including the recent kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State.

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of 41 Federal Government Colleges (Federal Unity Colleges) across the country as fears grow over rising kidnappings targeting schoolchildren.

This directive follows recent abductions in Kebbi and Niger States, including the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls earlier this week.

In a statement issued late Friday, the Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, announced that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, approved the shutdown to prevent any further security breaches.

Police said officers were deployed but the attackers had already forced the students out of their hostel and escaped to an unknown location.

This incident adds to a troubling history of school abductions, echoing the 2014 kidnapping of nearly 300 girls in Chibok.

Reacting on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over both the Kebbi school abductions and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other soldiers in Borno State.

“I am deeply saddened by these tragedies. The families of the kidnapped schoolgirls and our fallen soldiers are in my prayers,” Tinubu wrote on X.

Security agencies have intensified operations to rescue the abducted students as the Federal Government evaluates further steps to secure schools nationwide.
