Former Anambra State governor and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

The development was confirmed on Wednesday night in a statement signed by his former media aide, Fred Chukwulobe, who dismissed circulating rumours that Ngige had been abducted by unknown gunmen.

“Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past minister of labour and employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later,” Chukwulobe stated.

Ngige was recently in the news after his convoy was attacked by armed men in Anambra State, though he was not inside the vehicle at the time.

Sources revealed that Ngige had been in contact with EFCC officials and had been cooperating with the agency’s investigation. He was reportedly instructed to return his travel documents but travelled for medical reasons instead.

According to reports, Ngige left Nigeria for a medical trip to the United States but lost his passport while transiting through the United Kingdom. This forced him to abort the trip and return to Nigeria using emergency travel documents issued by the Nigerian High Commission in the UK.

Upon arriving in Abuja, Ngige prepared a letter notifying the EFCC of the lost passport and explaining why he could not return the document as required. However, he had not yet submitted the letter when EFCC operatives arrived at his Asokoro residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road and took him into custody.

Sources say the former minister expressed surprise at the arrest, insisting he had not violated his administrative bail and had cooperated fully with investigators.

Further details on the EFCC’s actions are expected in the coming days.
