The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has congratulated members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) as the group marks its fifth anniversary.

In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB described ESN operatives as men and women whose “courage and sacrifice” demonstrate that insecurity and criminal violence can be resisted when leadership is “sincere and accountable.”

According to the group, ESN was established on December 12, 2020, by IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a community-based security outfit to address what it described as a security vacuum in parts of the South-East. IPOB said the group was formed to protect rural communities and farmlands that had come under repeated attacks by armed groups.

The statement claimed that before ESN’s formation, many communities experienced attacks on farms, displacement of villages, and loss of lives, adding that the presence of ESN had helped reduce such incidents and allowed farmers to return to their lands.

IPOB also alleged that ESN operatives have faced sustained opposition, including “propaganda, intimidation, and attacks,” but insisted that the group has remained resolute despite casualties and other challenges.

“Some ESN operatives have been abducted, their families targeted, and others have paid the ultimate price in defense of our homeland,” the statement said, adding that the mission of the group “has not wavered.”

The organisation commended ESN for what it described as securing forests and rural areas with limited resources, funded largely through voluntary contributions from IPOB members worldwide.

IPOB further called on Biafrans to continue supporting ESN through vigilance and cooperation, while also urging the international community, including the United States, to pay closer attention to security threats posed by extremist groups operating in Nigeria.

The statement concluded by congratulating ESN on “five years of steadfast service,” reaffirming IPOB’s support for the group as it marks the anniversary.
