The Joint Revenue Board (JRB), formerly known as the Joint Tax Board, in collaboration with the Nigerian Revenue Services (NRS), previously the Federal Inland Revenue Service, has announced the launch of the Nigerian Tax ID Portal.

According to the agencies, the portal will officially go live on January 1, 2026, providing a simplified process for individuals and businesses to retrieve their Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) without undergoing a fresh registration.

Under the new system, individual Nigerians will access their Tax ID using their National Identification Number (NIN), while registered businesses will retrieve theirs using their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.

The development follows an earlier announcement by the FIRS that the NIN issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has automatically become the Tax ID for individuals, while CAC numbers now serve as the Tax ID for corporate entities.

Officials say the use of NIN and CAC numbers has addressed public concerns that Nigerians would be required to undergo another tedious tax registration process, especially as tax compliance becomes increasingly important for services such as opening bank accounts.

What You Should Know

Four tax reform laws have been enacted under the Tinubu administration. Two of the laws took effect in June 2025, while the remaining two are scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.

Despite the controversies surrounding the reforms, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has stated that implementation will proceed as planned.

Oyedele said the reforms would deliver significant tax relief, noting that about 98 per cent of Nigerian workers will either pay no PAYE tax or pay reduced taxes under the new framework.

He added that approximately 97 per cent of small businesses will be exempt from corporate income tax, VAT, and withholding tax, while larger companies will benefit from reduced tax liabilities.

According to him, the reforms are designed to promote economic growth, inclusivity, and shared prosperity, stressing that the government has spent the past six months on system upgrades, capacity building, and stakeholder sensitisation ahead of the 2026 rollout.
