The Eastern Union (EU), a political pressure group for the people of the Old Eastern Region, has expressed support for former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party and had been part of the ADC coalition, officially joined the ADC on December 31, 2025. The move effectively ended speculation that he could still emerge as the Labour Party’s flag bearer amid internal divisions within the party.

In a statement signed by its National President, Hon. Charles Anike, the Eastern Union described Obi’s decision as bold, necessary, and well-timed, noting that it would allow the ADC leadership to make early adjustments ahead of the 2026 political calendar.

Anike alleged that the Labour Party had been infiltrated by elements loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC), whom he described as political “moles” planted to destabilise opposition parties, similar to what he claimed occurred within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to him, the strong showing of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections through Obi’s candidacy unsettled the APC, which he said had since sought to weaken the opposition through internal crises.

He further alleged that the ruling party’s strategy was aimed at sustaining what he described as a “stolen mandate” by fomenting divisions within major opposition parties.

“In this circumstance, the Nigerian masses have been waiting seriously for this move by the people’s candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and now by his defection, the people’s hope has been revived and rekindled,” Anike said.

He added that the group would begin nationwide mobilisation and sensitisation efforts to encourage Nigerians to renew their resolve to reclaim the country from what he termed political opportunists.

Anike described Obi’s defection as a major boost to public morale and a setback for the APC, stating that it had reinvigorated opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He dismissed recent defections by some state governors to the ruling party as political miscalculations, claiming they were designed to mislead Nigerians ahead of future elections.
