The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the movement of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses across the state.

The directive, which will take effect from June 1, 2026, was announced by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

In a statement issued by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA said the decision followed growing complaints and operational challenges caused by the increasing use of public buses for transporting goods and bulky items.

According to the authority, the practice has negatively affected passenger comfort, safety, and efficient service delivery within the state’s transport system.

LAMATA explained that the decision was reached after a strategic meeting involving the agency and heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies.

The statement noted that stakeholders unanimously agreed that the movement of goods on regulated buses must be halted and reorganised to create a more balanced and sustainable transport system.

“LAMATA emphasised that the enforcement of the suspension will be strict and uncompromising,” the statement said.

The authority warned that any bus driver caught conveying goods after the enforcement date would face immediate dismissal and blacklisting.

“In addition, any ground staff or LAMATA personnel at terminals or loading points found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses will be summarily dismissed without exception,” the authority stated.
