The Oyo State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt and rescue operation following a coordinated attack by armed hoodlums on schools and nearby communities in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of May 15, 2026, and resulted in the death of an assistant headmaster.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the attackers, who operated on motorcycles, simultaneously invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and Community Grammar School/L. A Primary School, Esiele.
During the attack, several pupils, students, and staff members, including the Vice Principal, Mrs Alamu Folawe, were abducted by the gunmen.
The police, however, stated that no pupil or student had been confirmed dead as of the time of filing this report.
The command confirmed that an assistant headmaster identified as Mr Adesiyan was killed during the incident.
An okada rider was also reportedly shot dead after resisting attempts by the attackers to seize his motorcycle.
“The command further gathered that Community Grammar School, Esiele, operates within the same premises as L. A Primary School, Esiele,” the statement said.
According to the police, the attackers also took away a Toyota Corolla vehicle belonging to the abducted Vice Principal before later setting the vehicle ablaze along a road leading to the forest.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reportedly led security operatives and other service commanders to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and operational coordination.
The police said tactical teams, operational assets, and intelligence platforms have been deployed to the affected communities to facilitate the rescue of the abducted victims and arrest those responsible for the attack.

“Operational assets, tactical teams and intelligence platforms have since been deployed to the affected communities to prevent any further breakdown of law and order, ensure public safety and facilitate the rescue of the abducted victims,” the statement added.
The police also appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant, and provide credible information that could assist ongoing rescue operations.
The latest attack has raised fresh concerns over insecurity and attacks on schools in parts of the country.
