The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike across 11 state-owned universities if the governments of Edo, Delta, Ondo, Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states fail to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement by the end of July.

The warning was issued on Monday by the union’s Benin and Yola Zonal Coordinators, who accused the affected state governments of failing to implement the agreement more than six months after it was signed.

Speaking at a press conference, Benin Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Monday Igbafen, said ASUU branches in the affected institutions had already begun mobilising members for a total shutdown of academic activities if the outstanding issues were not resolved.

According to him, while federal universities and several state-owned institutions have implemented the agreement, the affected states are yet to pay the Consolidated Academic and Technologists Allowance (CATA), other approved allowances, and salary arrears dating back to January 2026.

Similarly, Yola Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Dani Mamman, described the continued delay as a violation of collective bargaining agreements, insisting that lecturers were only demanding their legitimate entitlements.

ASUU urged the affected governors to urgently implement the agreement and clear all outstanding arrears to prevent an indefinite strike that could disrupt academic activities across the affected universities.
