Relationship coach and author Solomon Buchi has sparked widespread reactions on social media after sharing his views on the financial and domestic responsibilities of married couples.

In a video that has since gone viral, Buchi argued that “a woman should never have to pay rent”, insisting that providing shelter is one of the basic responsibilities of a husband.

“A woman should never have to pay rent. If you are a man and you claim to be a husband, you should be able to provide at least shelter. You’re meant to be a provider. You’re meant to be a protector,” he said.

However, Buchi maintained that if a man is expected to shoulder the financial responsibility of providing for the home, then the wife should equally embrace traditional domestic roles.

According to him, “if you believe the man should exclusively provide, then you should exclusively be domesticated,” arguing that wives should take responsibility for cooking, cleaning, and creating a comfortable home environment.

“Your husband provides the finances, you build the home. You wash, you cook, you make sure that you turn that house into a home. You provide warmth and comfort,” he added.

Buchi further criticized what he described as double standards, claiming that some women expect men to pay all household expenses while also sharing domestic chores.

He concluded by advising men seeking traditional marriages to also expect traditional values from their partners.

His remarks have since ignited heated conversations online, with many Nigerians divided over whether modern marriages should strictly follow traditional gender roles or embrace shared responsibilities.
