Lionel Messi has hit back at Argentina’s critics after inspiring the defending champions to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England, insisting his side has once again proved why they belong among football’s elite.

Although the Argentina captain did not get on the scoresheet, he was the architect of his team’s comeback, providing two late assists to send Lionel Scaloni’s men into the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where they will face Spain.

England looked set for victory after Anthony Gordon fired them ahead in the 55th minute, leaving Argentina with little time to respond.

However, the South Americans refused to surrender.

With just five minutes remaining, Messi worked a short corner before picking out Enzo Fernández on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder unleashed a stunning curling strike beyond Jordan Pickford to restore parity.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Messi produced another moment of brilliance, delivering a pinpoint cross to Lautaro Martínez, who powered home the winning header to complete Argentina’s remarkable turnaround.

Messi sends message to critics

Speaking after the match, Messi admitted Argentina had faced intense criticism throughout the tournament but said the players never lost belief in themselves.

“It hurts whoever it hurts and they can say whatever they want. We proved once again on the pitch that nobody gives us anything,” Messi said.

“We came in under fire, with a lot of doubts, but I knew this group always competes. I was sure we would be among the final four and, thank God, we made it into the top two.”

Argentina have come under scrutiny during the World Cup, with some fans and former players questioning refereeing decisions that went in their favour during earlier matches.

Messi, however, dismissed the criticism and insisted his team had earned their place in the final through determination and quality.

“If we had lost against England, people would have come out and talked nonsense about us, but we didn’t give them the chance. We were fortunate to win and get through such an important match.”

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also praised his teammates for refusing to give up despite trailing for much of the contest.

“They can say whatever they want. We compete, we fight, and we also play good football. Look at how we played today—we dominated England even while we were behind.

“I am proud, and happy to make all Argentinians happy.”

Argentina will now take on Spain in the World Cup final on July 19, with Messi aiming to lead his country to a second consecutive world title and further cement his status as one of football’s greatest-ever players.
