England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his tactical decisions following his side’s dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal, insisting the Three Lions’ collapse had more to do with losing control of the game than his substitutions.

England looked on course for a first World Cup final appearance since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead early in the second half at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

However, the defending champions mounted a late comeback as Enzo Fernández equalised before Lautaro Martínez headed home a stoppage-time winner to send Argentina into the final.

‘We became too passive’

Reflecting on the defeat, Tuchel admitted England failed to maintain their intensity after taking the lead.

“We’re disappointed. We were so close, but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances,” Tuchel told the BBC.

“We could not turn possession around, and then we conceded too many crosses, too many shots and too many chances.

“We were close, but we couldn’t keep the level up after we scored.”

Tuchel defends controversial substitutions

The German coach has come under criticism for replacing goalscorer Anthony Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa in the 72nd minute, a move many believe invited even more pressure from Argentina.

But Tuchel insisted the tactical switch was necessary after England began losing control of the match.

“We tried to help the players,” he explained.

“We conceded a chance straight away, and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open.

“Even before the substitutions, we had already started conceding too many crosses and chances.”

‘I’m responsible’

When asked whether he got his tactics wrong, Tuchel refused to second-guess his decisions.

“As soon as you lose, you get criticised. That’s the nature of football,” he said.

“No one knows what would have happened if we had made different decisions. I took those decisions, so I take the criticism.”

The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager also rejected suggestions that England should have continued attacking after taking the lead, arguing his players simply could not keep possession long enough to launch meaningful attacks.

Tuchel focused on England future

Despite the painful semifinal exit, Tuchel confirmed he has no intention of stepping down.

The 52-year-old, whose contract runs until the 2028 European Championship, said he remains committed to leading England into the next major tournament.

“We keep going. My contract runs until the home Euros, and I’m looking forward to that,” Tuchel said.

“Right now it’s difficult to think that far ahead, but that’s the plan.”

England’s hopes of ending their 60-year wait for another World Cup title may be over, but Tuchel insists he remains determined to lead the Three Lions back into contention at Euro 2028.
