Senate President Godswill Akpabio has threatened legal action against the contractor responsible for renovating the National Assembly complex over persistent technical faults affecting the microphones in both the Senate and House of Representatives chambers.

Akpabio voiced his frustration during Wednesday’s plenary after several senators struggled with malfunctioning microphones while contributing to debates.

Describing the situation as unacceptable, the Senate President said the recurring technical failures had become an embarrassment to both the National Assembly and the country.

‘We were thoroughly embarrassed’

Akpabio revealed that the same problem occurred a day earlier during the opening of National Assembly Week in the House of Representatives, where he represented the Senate.

According to him, both legislative chambers were renovated by the same contractor.

“I was in the House of Representatives yesterday to represent you at the opening of the National Assembly Week, and the Speaker and I were thoroughly embarrassed,” he said.

Contractor may face legal action

The Senate President warned that the National Assembly would not hesitate to pursue legal remedies if the contractor failed to correct the defects.

“If this continues, we have steps we can take legally to ensure that a good job is done because this is an embarrassment to our nation,” he stated.

Akpabio also urged senators to take note of the repeated equipment failures, saying their observations would justify any future action against the contractor.

“I hope you are taking note of it so that when they go to social media to start complaining after we have taken action, you will know why we took the action.

“You are all witnessing what is going on now.”

The repeated microphone failures have disrupted legislative proceedings in recent days, prompting fresh concerns about the quality of the renovation work carried out at the National Assembly complex.
