Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has admitted that missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains one of the biggest disappointments of his international career, although he insists he has no regrets about representing Nigeria.
Speaking in a World Cup special interview, the Fulham star reflected on his journey with the Super Eagles, his milestone 100th appearance, the influence of Nigerian legend Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, and the unforgettable moment that remains his favourite in the national team’s colours.
Iwobi acknowledged that while he would have loved to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy and feature at the 2026 World Cup, he chooses to focus on the positives of his career.
“I would have liked to win the AFCON, and I would have liked to be participating in the 2026 World Cup. But for me, there are no regrets because your story could have changed. I’m happy to be where I am today,” he said.
The midfielder also looked back on his Super Eagles debut a decade ago under former coach Sunday Oliseh, describing it as a memorable experience after previously representing England at youth level.
Iwobi revealed that Okocha played an important role in his decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria, although the final choice was entirely his.
According to him, the Nigerian football icon encouraged him to follow his heart and enjoy the game without pressure.
“He always told me to do what felt right and enjoy my football. I tried Nigeria with the U-23 team and immediately felt at home. Nigeria is where my heart is.”
Asked to pick his most memorable goal for the Super Eagles, Iwobi chose his strike against Zambia that secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
He said the goal remains special because his parents were in the stadium to witness the moment.
“Being able to celebrate that goal with my mum and dad meant everything to me. That’s who I play for.”
Despite reaching the landmark of 100 appearances for Nigeria, Iwobi stopped short of describing himself as a football legend.
Instead, he said it was up to fans and the football community to make that judgment, adding that representing Nigeria has been one of the greatest honours of his career.
“I am proud to have made 100 appearances for a country with so many talented players, and hopefully I can make another 100,” he said.
Offering advice to his younger self, Iwobi encouraged young footballers to stay positive during difficult moments and remain true to themselves.
“There will be bad days, but keep smiling, keep believing and keep being yourself because you never know how many people you’re inspiring,” he added.
