A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced three men to life imprisonment over terrorism-related offences linked to the abduction of school pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The sentence was delivered on Thursday, July 23, 2026, by Justice Salim Ibrahim after the convicts pleaded guilty to charges connected to the attack.

The convicted persons are Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, also known as Yunusa Bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar.

The case is connected to the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire, an incident that drew national attention because of the number of victims involved and the fear it created among parents, teachers and communities in Oyo State.

What the Court Decided

Justice Ibrahim sentenced the three men to life imprisonment after they admitted guilt to some of the terrorism-related charges filed against them.

According to reports, the charges included concealment of information, links to terrorist activity, kidnapping-related offences and alleged connection to the Darul Salam group, described as an affiliate of the Ansaru terrorist organisation.

The court also ordered that the prison term should begin from the date of their arrest.

Prosecutors said the convicts failed to provide information about persons linked to the attack, despite allegedly knowing details that could have helped security agencies.

Who Are the Convicts?

The three convicted men were identified as:

  • Yunusa Musa, also known as Yunusa Bin Musa
  • Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar

They were reportedly arrested by the Department of State Services before being arraigned on terrorism-related charges.

Reports also said the defendants were accused of concealing information about alleged masterminds of the attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

DSS to Appeal the Sentence

The Department of State Services has said it will appeal the judgment.

According to Channels Television, the DSS believes the life sentence is not enough considering the gravity of the crimes linked to the abduction.

The agency reportedly cited the killing of teachers during the incident as one of the reasons it wants a stronger punishment.

This means the case may not be fully over, as the appeal could lead to further legal proceedings.

Background of the Oyo School Abduction

The Oyo school abduction happened in May 2026 when armed attackers stormed schools in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted pupils and teachers.

The affected schools included Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele; and L.A. Primary School.

The victims spent several weeks in captivity before they regained freedom in July.

The incident caused fear across Oyo State and raised fresh concerns about school safety, especially in rural communities and areas close to forest reserves.

Why the Case Matters

The judgment is important because it is one of the major legal outcomes linked to the Oyo school abduction.

It also shows that security agencies are moving from rescue operations to prosecution of suspects connected to the attack.

However, the DSS appeal suggests that the government may still push for heavier punishment against those found guilty in connection with terrorism, kidnapping and attacks on schools.

For parents and school authorities, the case also brings back questions about how schools can be better protected, especially in communities vulnerable to armed attacks.

What Happens Next?

The next major step is the DSS appeal.

If the appeal goes ahead, a higher court may review the life sentence and decide whether the punishment should remain, be increased, or be otherwise adjusted according to law.

For now, the three convicted men have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
