One partner pays the rent and believes they are doing enough. The other handles cooking, cleaning, shopping and family appointments but feels their contribution goes unnoticed.

Neither may fully understand why the other is frustrated.

Conversations about money and household responsibilities require more than deciding who pays which bill or washes the dishes. They involve expectations, available time, financial capacity and what each person considers fair.

Couples can make these conversations more productive by replacing assumptions with specific agreements—and reviewing those agreements when circumstances change.

Start the conversation before frustration takes over

A discussion about household expenses is unlikely to go well when it begins during an argument over an unpaid bill.

Choose a time when neither partner is rushing, exhausted or distracted. Agree on what you want to discuss rather than introducing every unresolved issue at once.

An opening such as, “Can we review this month’s expenses and how we’re sharing the work at home?” gives the conversation a clear purpose.

Describe the difficulty without attacking your partner’s character. For example: “I’m struggling to manage dinner and cleaning after work. Can we agree on a different arrangement?”

The Gottman Institute recommends a gentle opening, specific requests and listening to each partner’s perspective when discussing money.

Put the real household costs on the table

Start with a shared list of expenses: rent, food, electricity, transport, school fees, healthcare, debt repayments and other commitments.

Include irregular costs, such as annual rent, repairs and family celebrations. A plan that considers only this week’s bills can leave both partners unprepared for larger expenses.

Be clear about what each person can reliably contribute. Where income varies, discuss what happens during a lower-income month.

Financial transparency should help both partners understand their commitments. It does not require one person to surrender all financial independence or seek permission for every personal purchase.

Agree on what fairness means in your home

An equal split may suit some couples, while others prefer contributions based on income or an agreed division of expenses.

Consider this illustrative example: one partner earns ₦300,000 monthly and the other earns ₦150,000. If shared expenses total ₦180,000, an income-proportional arrangement would assign ₦120,000 to the higher earner and ₦60,000 to the other.

That is one option, not a universal rule. Debt obligations, childcare, health, working hours and unpaid care may change what is manageable.

A partner’s lower income should not automatically give them less say in household decisions. The useful question is whether both people understand and freely accept the arrangement.

Count the planning as well as the physical work

Household work includes more than visible chores.

Someone notices that food is running low, remembers school deadlines, arranges repairs and keeps track of appointments. Those tasks also take attention and time.

Write down recurring responsibilities, including their planning steps. Instead of assigning “shopping,” clarify whether that includes checking supplies, preparing the list, buying items and putting them away.

This makes it easier to see whether one person is carrying most of the organising while the other completes occasional tasks.

Make agreements specific enough to follow

“Help more around the house” leaves room for different interpretations.

A clearer agreement might be:

  • One partner handles dinner on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • The other handles dinner on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Both agree how weekend meals and cleaning will be managed.
  • Whoever owns a task also tracks when it needs doing.

Discuss what “finished” means. Washing clothes, for example, might include drying, folding and putting them away.

Leave room for flexibility during illness, demanding work periods or family emergencies. An agreement should help the household function, not become a tool for punishment.

Discuss support for relatives and personal spending

Assistance to parents, siblings and other relatives can be an important commitment. Discuss it openly when it affects shared finances.

Agree on what the household can afford, which contributions are ongoing and what requires another conversation.

It can also help to establish a personal spending amount that each partner can use independently, where finances allow. That preserves some freedom while keeping shared obligations visible.

Review the arrangement regularly

Set aside a short, regular check-in to review upcoming bills and household tasks.

Ask what worked, what felt overwhelming and what needs changing. A new job, a baby, illness or a change in income may require a different arrangement.

If the conversation becomes heated, pause and agree on a time to return to it. The American Psychological Association recommends regular financial discussions and taking a break when arguments escalate.
