Nigeria’s Flamingos have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2–1 in Morocco on Thursday, October 29.
Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan gave Nigeria a two-goal advantage before Emily Delgado scored a late consolation for Mexico.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s campaign alive and ends Mexico’s involvement in the competition.
Umejiaku delivers first-half breakthrough
Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 39th minute, putting Nigeria ahead after Mexico had resisted the Flamingos’ earlier attacking pressure.
The goal gave the Nigerian side an advantage approaching half-time and left Mexico needing a response to protect their quarter-final ambitions.
Dunstan doubles Nigeria’s lead
Mary Dunstan extended Nigeria’s advantage in the 70th minute, giving the Flamingos a valuable cushion entering the closing stages.
Mexico eventually reduced the deficit through Emily Delgado in added time, but the late goal was insufficient to force a comeback.
Nigeria held on to complete the 2–1 victory and secure a place among the tournament’s final eight teams.
Flamingos build on group-stage recovery
Nigeria entered the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B with six points.
The team recovered from a 2–1 defeat to Poland by beating Puerto Rico 2–0 and overcoming defending champions Korea DPR 3–1.
The victory over Korea DPR provided a major boost before the Mexico encounter. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Umejiaku and Kanyinsola Yusuf scored in that match, helping Nigeria secure qualification for the round of 16.
Thursday’s result extends the Flamingos’ winning run to three matches, maintaining the momentum generated during their recovery in the group stage.
Team answered pre-match call for focus
Before the Mexico fixture, Nigeria Football Federation Acting General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme visited the team’s training session and urged the players to concentrate on the next challenge.
Head coach Hakeem Busari also asked his squad to put their group-stage achievements behind them and prepare for the demands of knockout football.
The win means the Flamingos have successfully negotiated that first elimination-stage test, moving another step closer to a potential podium finish.
Venezuela next for Nigeria
Nigeria’s next assignment is a quarter-final meeting with Venezuela, scheduled for Sunday, November 1.
That fixture will offer the Flamingos an opportunity to reach the semi-finals and continue their pursuit of World Cup honours in Morocco.
