The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the holiday declaration reflects the significance of Eid-el-Kabir to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for peace, security, unity and national prosperity.

“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement read.

The declaration comes amid heightened security concerns and massive deployments by military and law enforcement agencies across the country over fears of possible attacks during the Sallah celebrations.

The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, disclosed that troops had been placed on high alert across the North-East region ahead of the festivities.

In a statement signed by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt Col Sani Uba, the military warned that remnants of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province could attempt isolated attacks on civilian targets using suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices.

“Credible intelligence available to the command indicates the possibility of isolated attempts by remnant Boko Haram Terrorist and Islamic State West Africa Province elements to exploit the festive period to carry out attacks against civilian targets,” the statement noted.

The military, however, assured residents that extensive countermeasures had already been activated to ensure safety during the celebrations.

According to the command, troops have been deployed to vulnerable locations while surveillance operations, patrols and intelligence gathering have been intensified in collaboration with other security agencies, the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilante groups.

“The command remains resolute in its determination to deny terrorists any freedom of action and ensure that the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations proceed in an atmosphere of peace, safety, and dignity for all,” the military added.

Security agencies in several states also announced major deployments ahead of the celebration.

In Bauchi State, the police command disclosed that personnel had been deployed to Eid grounds, highways, recreational centres and other public places across the state.

The Sokoto State Police Command also issued security advisories, warning against activities capable of disrupting public peace during and after the festivities.

The command said intelligence-led surveillance and patrols had been intensified around prayer grounds, markets, motor parks and critical infrastructure.

In Kogi State, the police command deployed 485 personnel drawn from tactical units, intelligence teams, counter-terrorism units and highway patrol teams to maintain law and order during the celebrations.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the Federal Capital Territory also announced the deployment of 4,000 personnel across Abuja and surrounding areas.

According to the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, specialised units including the Female Strike Force, Crack Squad and Agro Rangers have been mobilised to secure Eid prayer grounds, shopping malls, markets and other strategic locations.

The Kano State NSCDC command equally disclosed that 3,250 personnel had been deployed to ensure “watertight security” during and after the celebrations.

Security agencies across the country have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid suspicious gatherings and promptly report unusual movements or objects to authorities.
