BREAKING: INEC Publishes Tinubu, Shettima’s Academic Certificates, Personal Details Ahead of 2027 Election

• The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced the public display of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s academic certificates and personal particulars ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the academic credentials, personal particulars and nomination documents of presidential candidates for the 2027 general election, beginning with President Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The exercise, which began on Saturday, is in compliance with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires the commission to publish the credentials and personal information submitted by candidates within 21 days of receiving their nomination forms.

Documents contained in Form EC9, sighted by journalists, show that President Tinubu submitted his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, with the transcript indicating the degree was awarded “with honours” on June 22, 1979.

The documents also include his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, showing he served in Oyo State from December 1982 to November 1983.

According to the documents, Tinubu’s employment history lists three major positions:

• Mobil Nigeria Limited (1983–1992), where he reportedly left for career advancement.
• Lagos State Government (1999–2007), where he served as governor until the expiration of his tenure.
• Federal Government of Nigeria (2023–Present), serving as President.

The personal information section of the form lists his date of birth as March 29, 1952, his birthplace as Lagos, his occupation as politician, and his residential address as No. 4, Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos.

However, while his university qualification was fully listed, the years for his primary and secondary school attendance appeared as “0000” on the form.

Shettima’s Academic Records Displayed

The documents also revealed Vice President Kashim Shettima’s educational history, beginning with his Certificate of Primary Education from Lamisula I Primary School, where he studied between 1972 and 1978.

According to the records, Shettima graduated second in a class of 22 pupils, with English, History and Religious Knowledge listed among his strongest subjects.

His WAEC certificate from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, obtained in 1983, showed he earned six credits and passes, including distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics.

The Vice President also submitted records showing he obtained a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in 1989, before earning a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.

His NYSC certificate indicates he completed national service between October 1989 and October 1990.

Public Can Challenge False Declarations

INEC explained that Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and sworn affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties.

The commission added that the documents have been displayed at its offices nationwide, including state and local government offices, to enable members of the public inspect them.

Under the Electoral Act, Nigerians may apply for Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the nomination documents and seek legal redress if they believe any candidate made a false declaration or submitted forged credentials.

Meanwhile, INEC’s timetable indicates that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will officially commence on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and state assembly elections will begin at a later date.
