The Federal Government has announced plans to embed journalists with military units during selected operations as part of efforts to improve security reporting, promote transparency, and foster stronger collaboration between the media and security agencies.

The initiative was disclosed on Thursday by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), during the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in partnership with the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.

Represented by his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole (retd.), the Defence Minister said the move is designed to provide journalists with firsthand exposure to military operations, enabling more accurate reporting and a deeper understanding of the realities faced by security personnel on the frontlines.

The summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” brought together security chiefs, policymakers, media executives, academics, and civil society stakeholders to discuss ways of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Speaking at the event, Musa described the media as a vital stakeholder in national security management, noting that the nature of modern warfare has expanded beyond conventional battlefields to include the information domain.

According to him, the success of security operations should not be measured solely by victories on the battlefield but also by the level of public confidence and trust in security institutions.

“More than ever before, the media are not only enablers; they are stabilisers of government,” he said.

The minister emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in promoting national unity, patriotism, and resilience, especially during periods of insecurity and national uncertainty.

However, he cautioned media practitioners against the premature publication of sensitive operational information, warning that such actions could jeopardize ongoing missions, expose security personnel to danger, and inadvertently assist criminal and terrorist networks.

Musa explained that the Defence Ministry is currently exploring modalities for embedding journalists within military formations during operations as part of a broader strategy to improve public understanding of security efforts and strengthen strategic communication.

“The Defence Ministry is exploring arrangements to embed journalists with military units during operations to enable more accurate reporting and deeper understanding of operational realities,” he stated.

He added that the initiative reflects the changing dynamics of modern conflict, where information management, strategic communication, community engagement, and public perception have become critical components of national security alongside traditional military operations.

According to the minister, fostering a stronger partnership between the media and security agencies will help counter misinformation, enhance public awareness, and reinforce support for ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

Declaring the summit open, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the gathering as timely, noting that nations around the world are grappling with increasingly complex security threats that require coordinated responses from both government institutions and the media.

He stressed the importance of responsible journalism and effective communication in supporting national security objectives, while encouraging continued collaboration between the media and security agencies in the collective effort to safeguard Nigeria’s peace, stability, and development.
