- MTN has restored its airtime borrowing service after weeks of disruption, bringing relief to millions of subscribers who depend on emergency airtime and data advances.

Millions of MTN subscribers have welcomed the return of the network’s airtime lending service after weeks of disruption caused by an ongoing regulatory dispute over digital consumer lending.
The restoration allows users to once again borrow airtime and data during emergencies, a service many rely on to stay connected to work, banking platforms and loved ones.
Speaking on the development, Lagos resident Farouk Rabiu described the suspension as frustrating, recalling how he was unable to access his bank account after exhausting his data because he could no longer borrow airtime.
“I was devastated because, after exhausting my data, I was hoping to borrow credit to access my bank account. Instead, it was a major disappointment,” he said.
Although he acknowledged the service comes with charges, Rabiu said it remains an essential safety net for millions of Nigerians.
Industry stakeholders also defended the service during the dispute. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) estimated that about 40 million subscribers were affected, arguing that airtime lending has become critical economic infrastructure rather than just a telecom service.
The Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Nigeria (WASPAN) similarly maintained that airtime advances provide vital support for traders, artisans and small business owners who often lack access to traditional credit.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), however, insisted its regulations were aimed at improving consumer protection and transparency in digital lending. The commission later suspended enforcement of the rules pending the outcome of court proceedings.
With MTN now restoring the service, subscribers can once again access emergency airtime and data advances while the legal dispute over the regulation of the service continues.
