  • A National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer has ignited intense controversy after advising Nigerian youths to choose weed instead of crystal meth (“ice”), describing the hard drug as far more destructive and irreversible in its effects.

A video of a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer addressing a group of young people has gone viral after he claimed that crystal methamphetamine—popularly known as “ice”—is far more dangerous than weed (Igbo), and that he would “advise youths to take weed instead.”

In the clip, the officer clarified that both substances are harmful, but insisted that the consequences of crystal meth are more severe and often permanent.

“Though none of them is good, I don’t support any of them, but Ice is more deadly than Igbo. I will advise you to take Igbo rather than taking ice. If you smoke weed and go mad, you can be treated, but if you take ice and go mad, there’s no remedy,” he said.

The comments triggered a nationwide debate, with many Nigerians arguing that a drug-enforcement officer should discourage drug use entirely, not compare harmful substances. Others, however, said the officer was simply using a realistic approach to warn youths about the extreme dangers of meth.

Tuyo: “Weed has always been the best. Leave drugs so you fit live long.”

Goat: “See our drug enforcement officers—no single professionalism.”

Chukwu: “That’s a real father figure. My dad once told me to smoke weed instead of taking drugs like cigarettes or worse.”

Anelar: “Okay sir. I don save this video in case your men catch me with Igbo.”

Others insisted that the NDLEA should focus on total abstinence and invest more in drug education, rather than presenting weed as the lesser evil.

Crystal meth, known on the streets as “ice,” is a highly addictive hard drug linked to severe psychiatric disorders, violent behavior, organ damage, and irreversible neurological decline. Unlike cannabis, ice is classified globally as a life-threatening substance with long-term destructive effects.

Authorities have not yet formally responded to the officer’s comments.
