  • Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has criticised the manner in which news of her husband’s transfer to the Sokoto prison was released.

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed anger over how information about her husband’s transfer to the Sokoto correctional facility was made public. Her reaction came hours after one of Kanu’s lawyers announced the development on social media.

In a post shared on X, Okwu-Kanu said she only learned about the transfer “about three hours ago,” revealing that the individuals who visited Kanu on Friday failed to inform her directly before the news circulated online.

According to her, “Those who went to see him today did not give me any update on his transfer. Rather, they ran to social media to broadcast it.”

Okwu-Kanu, who did not mention names, expressed displeasure at what she described as unprofessional conduct. She warned those who visited her husband to act “in a civilised and professional manner,” stressing that she would not hesitate to “stress” anyone who continued to mishandle sensitive information.

Her remarks followed a statement by Kanu’s former lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, who disclosed that the IPOB leader had been moved from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention in Abuja to the Sokoto correctional centre. Ejimakor described the development as a move that places Kanu even farther from his family and legal representatives.

Kanu was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja after being convicted on multiple terrorism-related charges.

Reacting to the judgment, Okwu-Kanu accused the trial judge of executing a predetermined agenda, arguing that the court erred by ordering her husband to open his defence without first reading out the written law guiding the proceedings.
