- Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in Edo State’s Igarra community, destroying over 20 houses, washing away graves, and killing a motorcyclist as authorities begin emergency response efforts.

A devastating flood triggered by days of heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, washing away graves, destroying more than 20 houses, and claiming the life of a motorcyclist.
Residents said the persistent downpour left several communities submerged for days, causing extensive damage to homes, roads, and other property across the area.
Among the affected locations were Iretutu Axis, Pope Francis Road, Okpe Road, Market Road, and Rest House Road, where floodwaters swept through residential neighbourhoods.
The flood also washed away graves located within residential compounds, including one on Okpe Road near the Igarra Police Station. The private residence of Taiwo Akerele, former Chief of Staff to ex-Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, was also affected.
Residents described the incident as the worst flooding in a decade, noting that it occurred exactly 10 years after a similar disaster that claimed lives and destroyed several homes in the community.
A motorcyclist who was reportedly swept away by the raging floodwaters was found dead two days later.
“It was unfortunate that the motorcyclist was swept away by the flood and his corpse was discovered two days after,” a resident identified simply as Aliyu said.
Confirming the incident, the councillor representing Ward 1, Asebe Rabi, described the flooding as devastating, saying many residents had lost their homes, belongings, and sources of livelihood.
Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Alabi Oshionogue, said the council had notified the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and was working with relevant authorities to provide relief for affected residents.
According to him, the local government has begun documenting the damage while directing officials to immediately clear blocked drainages and remove debris deposited by the flood to reduce the risk of further destruction.
