The United States has opened a pathway for Nigerian professionals seeking employment through the H-1B visa programme, allowing qualified foreign workers to secure jobs with American companies willing to sponsor their visas.

The opportunity was highlighted in a publication released on Monday by Ellis Visa Sponsors, a US immigration law firm that tracks more than 180,000 American employers sponsoring foreign workers.

The H-1B visa programme enables US employers to hire highly skilled foreign professionals for specialised positions that typically require at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. Although the programme remains highly competitive due to annual visa limits, thousands of qualified international professionals receive sponsorship every year.

According to Ellis Visa Sponsors, the largest H-1B visa sponsors for 2026 include some of the world’s biggest technology and consulting firms.

The top 10 companies sponsoring H-1B visas in 2026 are:

  3. Microsoft
  4. Ernst & Young (EY)
  5. Deloitte Consulting
  6. Accenture
  7. Apple
  8. Intel
  9. IBM
  10. Meta

The immigration firm explained that obtaining US visa sponsorship can be challenging because of strict immigration rules and detailed documentation requirements.

It noted that a US visa sponsor is typically either an American employer or an eligible family member who formally supports a foreign national’s visa or permanent residency application. For employment-based visas, sponsoring employers must comply with regulations set by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Labor (DOL), including filing petitions, paying the prevailing wage and maintaining compliance throughout the worker’s employment.

To qualify for an employer-sponsored H-1B visa, applicants must have:

  • A legitimate job offer from a US employer.
  • A position that qualifies under the H-1B visa category.
  • The required educational qualifications, experience or specialised skills.
  • Non-immigrant intent where applicable.

The firm also outlined the application process for employers and prospective workers.

The first step involves employers registering prospective employees through the H-1B electronic lottery during the annual registration window, which typically opens in March. Employers are required to pay a registration fee and submit the applicant’s identification documents.

Candidates selected in the lottery proceed to the next stage, where employers file a Labor Condition Application (LCA) with the Department of Labor for certification.

After receiving LCA approval, employers submit Form I-129 (Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker) to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, along with supporting documents such as the employee’s credentials, job description and the required filing fees.

For applicants outside the United States, the final stage involves completing the visa stamping process at a US embassy or consulate.

This includes submitting Form DS-160, paying the visa application fee, scheduling a visa interview and presenting documents such as a valid passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, approved I-129 petition, I-797 approval notice, payment receipts and passport photographs.

Successful applicants can begin employment in the United States once their visa has been approved and all immigration requirements have been completed.
