• Haiti have become the first nation to be knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brazil, ending their first World Cup campaign in 52 years.

Haiti have officially become the first team to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 3-0 defeat to Brazil on Friday night.

Brazil sealed the victory in the first half, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice and Vinicius Junior adding another goal before the break.

Cunha opened the scoring after converting a rebound from a Vinicius Junior effort before doubling Brazil’s lead with a composed finish from a through ball provided by the Real Madrid forward. Vinicius then got on the scoresheet himself to complete a dominant first-half display by the five-time world champions.

Haiti entered the match needing at least a draw to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive after Morocco’s victory over Scotland earlier in the day.

The result leaves Brazil and Morocco level on four points at the top of Group C, while Scotland have three points. Haiti remain without a point and can no longer progress regardless of the outcome of the final round of matches.

Despite trailing by three goals, Haiti pushed forward in the second half in search of their first goal of the tournament. However, they struggled to create clear chances and failed to seriously test Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The 2026 tournament marked Haiti’s first World Cup appearance since 1974, ending a 52-year wait to return to football’s biggest stage. Their qualification was considered a remarkable achievement, particularly as the team was unable to play any of its qualifiers at home due to the ongoing unrest in the country.

Brazil, however, suffered an injury scare during the match after winger Raphinha was forced off in the first half with a suspected injury after going down without contact.

The South American giants will now turn their attention to their final group-stage fixture as they aim to secure top spot in Group C and book their place in the knockout rounds.
