“I’m Alive and Well”: Ex-Anambra Governor Willie Obiano Breaks Silence on Death Rumour

• A former commissioner and close associates have dismissed social media rumours claiming that ex-Governor Willie Obiano has died, confirming he is alive, healthy, and living in Texas.

Rumours circulating on social media about the death of former Anambra State governor Willie Obiano have been dismissed as false by his former Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba.

Reports claiming that the 70-year-old ex-governor had passed away spread quickly across the Anambra media space, prompting emotional reactions from some of his close aides who described him as a humane and exceptional leader.

However, Adinuba issued a firm rebuttal, stating that Obiano is alive, healthy, and in excellent condition.

In a statement he personally signed, Adinuba said:

“The Nigerian media have been abuzz over a rumour that the immediate past Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has passed on in London. This rumour has no basis. Chief Obiano lives in Texas, United States, and not London. He is not just alive, but strong, healthy, and too agile for someone who has just turned 70.”

He added that the widespread concern demonstrated how deeply the former governor is valued:

“We thank people from different walks of life for their acute interest in the former governor, whose large-heartedness and record of service delivery remain solid by any standard. The outpouring of love shows how much Chief Obiano matters almost four years after leaving office.”

Adinuba compared the rumour to past false reports about iconic Nigerian leaders, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, whose death was once falsely announced while he was still alive.

Another aide, Onyebuchi Okpala, also took to Facebook to debunk the claims, urging the public to disregard the “fake news” and affirming that the former governor remains in good health.

Obiano, who governed Anambra from 2014 to 2022, relocated to Houston, Texas after completing his second term. Before becoming governor, he had served as a top executive at Fidelity Bank.

He is currently standing trial at the Federal High Court over allegations of mismanaging N4 billion during his tenure as governor of Anambra State. Obiano hails from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
