Traders in Onitsha and parts of Anambra State on Monday observed a sit-at-home protest, citing solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation by the Anambra State Government.

In a statement issued by the Igbo Ministers Commission, the group said the shutdown, scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, was aimed at supporting traders who have continued to shut their businesses in protest over Kanu’s continued detention, despite what it described as significant financial losses.

The statement, signed by Rev. Anthony Uzor, President of the Igbo Ministers Commission, accused Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, of adopting a “confrontational and high-handed” approach instead of engaging in dialogue with the affected traders. The group argued that traders in Onitsha have a long history of resistance to authoritarian policies and called on political leaders in the South-East to take more active steps toward securing Kanu’s release.

According to the group, the sit-at-home directive is a “strategic and symbolic action” meant to compel dialogue and prevent further escalation of tensions in the region. It stressed that IPOB had previously suspended sit-at-home actions but retained the option as a last resort.

The organisers stated that the action would last for one day only, adding that discussions with traders in Onitsha would resume from February 3 to explore what they described as a more peaceful and sustainable resolution to the impasse.
