‘I’ve Guinean Citizenship Until My Passport Expires In 2020’ – Tinubu Confirms Dual Citizenship To Tribunal
The LP had presented the Guinean passport before the court, alleging that Tinubu did not meet the constitutional requirement of obtaining 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be elected as President
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has claimed that his Guinean citizenship expired in 2020, and his Guinean passport, presented by the opposition, also expired in the same year.
VerseNews Nigeria reports that the new Nigerian President made this assertion through his lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), while seeking the dismissal of a petition by the Labour Party (LP) aimed at removing him from office.
Tinubu’s lawyer argued that the opposition’s claim regarding his dual citizenship was an attempt to embarrass the President.
The LP had presented the Guinean passport before the court, alleging that Tinubu did not meet the constitutional requirement of obtaining 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be elected as President.

According to Section 134(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution, a candidate for the presidency must have the highest number of votes cast at the election and secure at least one-quarter of the votes in at least two-thirds of all the states in the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election was challenged by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the LP, both of whom alleged that Tinubu did not meet the constitutional voting requirements.
In defense, Tinubu’s counsel argued that there is no superiority between the votes secured in the most populous states, such as Lagos and Kano, and the least populous states, such as Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Ekiti. The case is before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.
