The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after he was attacked by suspected gunmen in Lagos.
Ajiboye was reportedly shot on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
According to reports, the assailants intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road axis and opened fire, leaving the car riddled with bullet holes.
Photos and videos that surfaced on social media after the attack showed Ajiboye’s white vehicle with multiple bullet holes on the windscreen and several other parts of the car.
Initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack after sustaining gunshot injuries. However, it was later confirmed that the NURTW official died from his injuries.
Reacting to the tragic incident, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a painful loss.
In a tribute shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Sego said he was devastated by the death of the union leader, whom he described as a loyal ally, trusted friend and dedicated member of the union.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” he wrote.
He described the late Ajiboye as more than a political associate, saying he was a pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation whose unwavering loyalty and commitment would never be forgotten.
“Comrade Toba Ajiboye was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend, a man of steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment, and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation. His friendship, unwavering support and selfless dedication to the union over the years will forever remain etched in my heart,” Sego added.
The NURTW chairman extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the union, praying for God to grant him eternal rest.
“Farewell, my dear friend. Your loyalty, friendship and unwavering support will forever remain in my heart. You will be deeply missed, and I will never forget the bond we shared,” he said.
Authorities are yet to officially identify the attackers or announce any arrests in connection with the incident.
