Marcus Rashford’s £40m Manchester United Exit Clause Expires

• Marcus Rashford’s potential departure from Manchester United has entered a new phase after his £40 million release clause expired, meaning any transfer will now require direct negotiations between the club and interested suitors.

Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United has taken a fresh twist after the expiration of his £40 million (€47.1 million/$53.1 million) release clause, ending the automatic buyout option that was available to most clubs.

With the clause no longer active, any club interested in signing the England international must now negotiate a transfer fee directly with Manchester United, potentially making a deal more complicated during the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old forward is expected to return to pre-season training at Old Trafford alongside teammates who featured in the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, unless an agreement over his future is reached beforehand.

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.

The Spanish champions had the option to make the move permanent for €30 million but ultimately decided against activating the clause. Barcelona have since strengthened their attack with the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in an €80 million deal, effectively ending Rashford’s hopes of a permanent stay at the club.

According to reports, Rashford has already turned down several offers, including proposals that were reportedly more financially rewarding than his current contract at Manchester United.

The forward remains under contract with the Red Devils until 2028, leaving the club in a strong negotiating position despite growing speculation over his future.

Notably, Rashford’s release clause did not apply to Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, preventing either club from triggering the fixed-fee option.

A product of Manchester United’s famed academy, Rashford has made more than 400 appearances for the club, scoring 138 goals since making his senior debut in 2016.

However, he has not featured for United since December 2024, and with his future still unresolved, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining whether he remains at Old Trafford or begins a new chapter elsewhere.
