Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil defeated Japan 2-1 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash in Houston on Monday.

The Arsenal forward, who came off the bench in the second half, struck in the 96th minute to seal victory for the five-time world champions just as the match looked destined for extra time.

Japan took the lead in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano, who capitalised on a misplaced pass before firing past the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Brazil responded after the break when veteran midfielder Casemiro headed home Gabriel Magalhães’ cross in the 56th minute to level the score.

Vinícius Júnior came close to putting Brazil ahead shortly after, but his effort struck the post after being tipped by Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who produced several impressive saves throughout the encounter.

With extra time looming, Martinelli delivered the decisive moment, firing home deep into stoppage time to book Brazil’s place in the Round of 16, where they will face either Ivory Coast or Norway.
