Former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is on the verge of a potential move to Turkish side Trabzonspor after the club confirmed it has opened transfer negotiations with the Egyptian superstar.

Trabzonspor announced on Tuesday that Salah is expected to arrive at Istanbul Ataturk Airport on Wednesday before travelling to Trabzon later in the day to continue discussions over the proposed transfer.

The 34-year-old left Liverpool at the end of last season, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield during which he won the UEFA Champions League, two Premier League titles and established himself as one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

Salah scored 257 goals in 442 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, making him the third-highest goalscorer in the club’s history. He also netted 193 Premier League goals, placing him fourth on the competition’s all-time scoring chart behind Alan Shearer, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney.

Although he endured a difficult final campaign with Liverpool, scoring seven league goals, Salah remains one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, with 66 goals in 119 appearances for Egypt.

The Egyptian captain had also been linked with Turkish giants Besiktas, but Trabzonspor appear to have taken the lead in the race for his signature.

Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish Super Lig last season, securing a place in the UEFA Europa League play-off round.
