The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned bakers in Niger State against using banned substances in the production of bread and other bakery products.

The agency specifically cautioned bakers against the use of potassium bromate and saccharin, which it said should not be used in bread production.

The warning was issued by NAFDAC’s Niger State Coordinator, James Kigbu, during a one-day sensitisation programme organised for master bakers in the Minna Emirate.

The programme focused on regulatory compliance and the need for bakers to adhere to approved standards in the production, packaging, labelling and marketing of bread.

Kigbu urged bakers to ensure that only approved ingredients and bread improvers are used in their production processes, stressing the importance of protecting consumers from potentially harmful or unauthorised substances.

NAFDAC Warns Against Unapproved Labels

The agency also warned bakers against using unapproved labels and advertisements on their products.

According to NAFDAC, bakery operators are expected to comply with the agency’s requirements on product labelling and advertising rather than using materials that have not received the necessary regulatory approval.

Kigbu further warned that bakeries found using banned bread improvers or unauthorised labels could face serious regulatory consequences.

These sanctions, he said, could include the immediate closure of affected bakeries, administrative fines and prosecution.

The warning is part of NAFDAC’s efforts to strengthen compliance among food producers and ensure that products available to consumers meet established safety and regulatory requirements.

Bakers in the state were therefore encouraged to familiarise themselves with NAFDAC’s regulations and ensure compliance to avoid sanctions while protecting the health and safety of consumers.
