A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a 38-year-old South African woman, identified as Will Ann, to a total of 25 years in prison for trafficking 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu delivered the judgment on Thursday after the defendant pleaded guilty to unlawfully importing the illicit drug into the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ann was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while arriving in Nigeria from Doha, Qatar.

According to the prosecution, the woman was arrested during the inward clearance of passengers aboard Qatar Airways Flight QR1433.

She was reportedly travelling with her three-year-old son when operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted her in July.

The NDLEA later arraigned Ann before the court in August, where she pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawfully importing 5.75kg of heroin into Nigeria on July 6.

During the proceedings, the prosecution told the court that the defendant had also admitted to committing the offence in an extrajudicial statement made before her guilty plea.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Egwuatu held that the law was settled on the consequences of a guilty plea, noting that a conviction follows where a defendant admits to committing an offence.

The judge subsequently convicted Ann of the offences brought against her.

Following the conviction, the prosecution urged the court to consider the street value of the seized heroin when determining the appropriate sentence.

The prosecution told the court that one kilogram of heroin was worth approximately N18 million, highlighting the significant value of the quantity allegedly imported by the defendant.

However, Ann appealed to the court for mercy and asked the judge to temper justice with mercy.

She expressed remorse over the incident and promised that she would never engage in such an act again.

The convict also told the court that she was unaware that the bag contained illicit drugs.

After listening to the submissions from both sides and considering the defendant’s plea for leniency, Justice Egwuatu stressed that criminal offences attract legal consequences.

The judge stated, “Crime does not pay,” adding that the law does not take “emotions” into consideration when dealing with criminal offences.

Justice Egwuatu subsequently sentenced Ann to 15 years’ imprisonment on Count 1 and 25 years’ imprisonment on Count 2.

The court ordered that both sentences should run concurrently, meaning the terms will be served at the same time rather than consecutively.

The judge further ordered that the seized heroin be destroyed if the convict fails to appeal the judgment within the period prescribed by law.

The case underscores the severe penalties attached to the unlawful importation and trafficking of controlled substances under Nigerian law.
