  • Newly elected PDP National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, promises “no more impunity, no more suppression of the will of Nigerians,” pledging a leadership focused on fairness, reconciliation, and democratic consolidation.

The newly elected national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, SAN, has vowed to ensure that power returns to the Nigerian people.

Speaking after the swearing-in of the new officers at the party’s Elective National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, early Sunday, November 16, Turaki assured members that there would be “no more impunity, no more suppression of the will of Nigerians.”

He emphasized that the party’s leadership would be attentive to the aspirations of its members and align with their collective will, declaring, “No more monkey dey work, baboon dey chop. If baboon wants to chop, baboon must be seated to work.”

Turaki also highlighted the party’s continuity, noting that PDP has maintained its name, motto, and logo, unlike other parties that started with it, ensuring a recognized brand across Nigeria.

Urging fairness, transparency, and justice, he reminded, “He who comes to equity must come with clean hands.” While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Turaki expressed confidence in the new leadership’s ability to deliver and announced that guiding principles for the party’s operations would soon be unveiled. He also appealed to the judiciary to respect the principle of stare decisis, emphasizing that no one should appear to undermine Nigerian democracy.

He stressed that a vibrant opposition is critical for democratic consolidation in Nigeria, noting that the party’s efforts extend beyond its own interests to the nation’s broader democratic health.

Addressing the expulsion of key figures like Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose, Ememobong stated it was a convention decision based on past misconduct against the party. He added that public dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s democratic experience has led to judicialisation of elections, reflecting a lack of faith in electoral processes.

Hamza Koshe as Deputy National Chairman (North), Dr. Daniel Ambrose Woyengikuro as Deputy National Chairman (South), Arapaja Taofeek Gbola-Oladeko as National Secretary, and a full roster of deputies, secretaries, and youth and women leaders, forming a leadership team committed to steering the party forward.
