The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved six new full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the University of Benin (UNIBEN), with the courses set to commence from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval followed a successful resource assessment conducted by the commission, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire.
Among the newly approved programmes are two specialised healthcare courses—Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy and Bachelor of Occupational Therapy—introduced to help address the shortage of professionals in critical areas of Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The university said the programmes align with the policy initiative of the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, aimed at training skilled manpower in specialised healthcare fields where there is currently a shortage of experts.
Newly Approved Undergraduate Programmes:
- Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy
- Bachelor of Occupational Therapy
- B.Sc International Relations
- B.Sc Intelligence and Security Studies
- B.Ed Primary Education
- B.N.Sc Nursing Science (in collaboration with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital)
In addition to the undergraduate courses, UNIBEN’s Centre of Excellence in Space Science Technology and Application has also received approval to offer Master’s and PhD degrees in Remote Sensing and Aeronautical Engineering.
