Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), extended unwavering support to the families of slain soldiers from the Okuama community tragedy in Delta State.
He assured them of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to providing maximum assistance, emphasizing justice and recovery of missing weapons.
Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), reiterated the Army’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book and recovering all missing weapons during the burial ceremony of the 17 military personnel at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on Wednesday.
VerseNews recalls that the soldiers were murdered by vicious criminals in the riverine Okuoma village on March 14, 2024, while on a peace mission to warring Okuama and Okoloba communities in the area, an act the COAS described as “most barbaric,” noting that it took 72 hours to recover the mutilated bodies of the slain soldiers.
Also, the COAS empathized with the plight of 10 widows, among whom three are pregnant. He underscored the Army’s pledge to stand by these families, offering support and solidarity in their time of need.
President Bola Tinubu, as the Special Guest of Honour, led a distinguished gathering of governors, lawmakers, and military officials in paying tribute to the fallen heroes.
He announced significant measures to honor their sacrifice, including scholarships for their children, irrespective of their unborn status, and provision of homes for the bereaved families across Nigeria.
This Online News Platform reported that poresident Tinubu awarded national honors to the fallen officers, symbolizing their exemplary service and sacrifice.
He reaffirmed the government’s determination to pursue justice, assuring that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will face the full force of the law.
“They won’t go unpunished. We will find them and our departed heroes will get justice,” the President vowed.
