The President Bola Tinubu-led government has approved ₦10bn to power Aso Rock with solar, cutting it off from the national grid.

The Federal Government has approved ₦10 billion to install a solar power system at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, taking it off the national electricity grid.

VerseNews gathered that this move comes as many Nigerians continue to face constant blackouts, high tariffs, and unreliable electricity supply.

The project is part of the ₦57.11 billion budget for the State House in 2025, with the solar installation being one of the main reasons for the budget increase. The government says the plan is to cut electricity costs and avoid future tariff hikes.

Reports also suggest that other government buildings may follow, as officials look for more stable and cost-effective energy options.

In February 2024, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said the State House owed ₦923.87 million in electricity bills, a figure later reduced to ₦342.35 million by the government. President Tinubu ordered the debt to be paid within 10 days, noting that the Villa was also affected by estimated billing.

Meanwhile, millions of Nigerians remain stuck with poor power supply, estimated bills, and the threat of even higher electricity tariffs.
